Celebrating a June Baby Foodie Style!

ypeng, one of ateventure's contributors celebrated her birthday 2 months ago and she threw a steamboat party over at hers.

of course, we started with appetiser.

yes, variety is crucial.

and then, the girls got busy, when you're having something at home, it's almost an unspoken rule that some foodstuff has to be d.i.y made, even if you have a caterer.

karen : you take some mushrooms and then a strip of bacon and then...

done.

ta-dah! our very own bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms.

believe me when i say, this is a regular spread out for any party that either one of us host...especially when it happens at ypeng's.

and our bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms were taken for a swim.

a whole pot of yummylicious goodies!

check out those little orange (heart attack) bombs!

mrs liaw is a super superb woman! i remembered her informing ypeng after the steamboat dinner that there's leftover crabs and they discussed a little bit. i asked ypeng afters if there's something wrong and she told me that crabs cannot be kept overnight so her mum was going to fry them. i thought ohhh...fry already then keep so that she can prepare something with it for hari esok.

little did i know that the noise of pots and pans clattering in the kitchen was mrs liaw cooking a dish itself while we were painting our nails and watching football! at freaking close to E-L-E-V-E-N o'clock at NIGHT!

this was what she whopped up for us in a jiffy! Sweet and Sour Crab @ 11pm! BEAT THAT! (only an excellent cook can do an impromptu dish like that! )

and of course, it was almost as if like we were on cue, grabbed stools, gathered around the table where the crabs were served and just started eating again! with a claw or crab meat inside our mouths, we were saying how great ypeng's mum was and how awesome the crabs tasted! hahaha

it was truly an amazing night! birthdays are awesome!

Food Wherever We Go!

so, karen, a friend of ours graduated recently and is now a DOCTOR! we are super super proud of her!!! yay!!!

and in true foodie tradition, we didn't only attend her graduation but we also checked out popular food around bukit jalil area where her convo took place.

we were told that dim sum is pretty popular around this area and yes it definitely was. there were about 3 or 4 dim sum restaurants along a single stretch of shops itself!

dim sum in the morning is always appropriate!

loh mai kai in a pau.

we visited tong kee to grab some pastries for those at home and karen's parents.

fresh charcoal bread outta da oven! (and was politely informed that no photos allowed right after : sighh...don't these people realise that this IS free publicity?)

where : bukit jalil & tong kee

what : dim sums (loh mai kai pau) & egg tarts & patries

Kuantan Finally!! Part 2

the next day, everyone started early despite having only slept a couple of hours due to our insane addiction to mahjong.

it rained early in the morning and was still drizzling a little but the girls were quite determined to hike up Panorama Hill (which kuan, our kuantan friend/guide/driver/organiser told us was not a tough feat at all but he was so very wrong).

for me personally, hill + me = not the best of friends. and after the hike, i have no intention to suggest otherwise.

it was a tough climb. i guess not so much of the feat but my own mental preparedness for the whole thing. of course i was not silly enough to think it was a stroll in the park but it was not exactly what i expected either. i gave up twice and wouldn't have bothered reaching the peak if it wasn't for pyee who kept insisting we'd only be doing this once and we'd definitely not climb the damn hill again so better we conquer it and live to tell the glory than admit defeat. W-O-W and so i huffed and puffed and climbed!

yay! i did reach the top after much encouragement from the never-say-die and super patient Sergeant Chan.

at this point, i sent a mental note to myself :

i.will.never.EVER.do.this.again.

going down hill.

crazy scary stairs!

yong tau foo noodles that we had after the climb, apparently the tofu is made from waterfall water.

pickled gourd that i ordered over an early japanese dinner before heading home...spicy, sour and absolutely delicious! not too bad for a random food risk i took :p

and we ended a road trip with a road trip favourite, junks!

Kuantan Finally!! Part 1

me and my makan buddies went on a road trip to kuantan to visit a good friend sometime back and we took a lot of pictures and took in a whole lotsa food too! it was about a 4-hour drive to kuantan from klang but it was definitely worth it!

ahh...the much anticipated...

presenting...THE famous stuffed crabs of kemaman.

i'd never thought that i'll ever say this about the insides of a crab but oh my! GLORIOUS!

our bountiful and super delicious lunch in full spread.

after resting a little while, we headed to find a little special delicacy.

pyee said we had to try this and made kuan made it a mission to hunt this down.

satar, this is an interesting thing to sample, the closest words that popped in my head while eating this was juicy fish paste. it didn't taste fishy at all, sweet succulent and a little interesting. :)

otak-otak, here in kuantan, it is prepared with a chunk-piece of fish in sambal-like sweet & spicy sauce, unlike the mousse ones that i'm used to.

stringy keropok lekor??? the makcik was boiling these, packed them with newspapers for customers to take home.

the modest looking warung satar.

we stopped here for tea-break.

roti and kopi, perfect for an afternoon fiasco.

we stopped by the beach for a wonderful time.

we came here for dinner.

herbal tea in bottles that can be passed off as beers!

herbal chicken

curry prawns...this is my favourite dish of the night.

i can't remember the name of this pork dish...

and end the day with a sweet note, ice-kacang by the beach...yummmzz!!

yes yes girls, i know, this is looooong overdue but hey, it's here now so let's revisit our makan journey again...in our minds unfortunately hehe.

part 2 coming right up!

where : kuantan

Get together at Govinds...

We heard that there was a new place in town with positive remarks and we just had to try it out! The ambience there was nice with a big pool in the middle of the restaurant with a mini waterfall which really give a nice touch to the place.

The food was good...i really liked the naan, great eaten while it is hot and fluffy while the lime juice was really refreshing...however i did not manage to take a picture of the Govinds Naan Special ordered by callmeCupcake...but it smelled and tasted delicious...yumsss....the mutton was soft and flavorful...erm can't comment much on the briyani rice as i did not really taste it...but overall food there was good and the pricing is affordable given its nice ambience!

Definately a revisit! However they need to do something about the mozzies!!
